Security+ Review
Overview
The CompTIA Security+ certification is an introductory credential for anyone looking to enter the cybersecurity field. The exam voucher itself costs $400. If you want any training from CompTIA, you will have to purchase additional bundles to receive a self-paced study guide, CertMaster practice, or live online training. You can check out the exam in more detail here.
Background
I studied Management Information Systems and Cybersecurity Management at the University of Dayton. Going into the exam, I already had a strong background in these areas, but it was still necessary to review and strengthen my knowledge prior to the test. After a lot of hard work, I was able to pass the CompTIA Security+ exam on my first try.
Study Materials
I utilized a variety of study materials to reinforce my understanding of Security+ concepts. These included the CompTIA Security+ self-paced study book, the Professor Messer YouTube series, Jason Dion’s Udemy exam practice questions, and various methods for mastering Security+ terms, like Quizlet. Additionally, I completed the Google Cybersecurity Certificate through Coursera and referenced two college textbooks on networking essentials and CompTIA Security+. However, I will not include links to the books since they are a bit outdated, and you can find the same information within other, updated sources.
- Udemy CompTIA Security+ (SY0-601) Practice Exams & Simulated PBQs
- Professor Messer SY0-701 Security+ Exam YouTube Series
- Coursera Google Cybersecurity Certificate Terms
The Exam
The exam is 90 minutes long, with the potential to be asked 90 questions or fewer, with 5 of the questions being PBQs (Performance-Based Questions). You must receive a score of 750 or higher out of 900 to pass. The updated SY0-701 exam covers:
- General Security Concepts
- Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations
- Security Architecture
- Security Operations
- Security Program Management and Oversight
Exam Tips
- Purchase a comprehensive study bundle, such as the CompTIA Security+ bundle with an eBook study guide and retake option. Having a retake option takes off pressure and provides a safety net in case you aren’t as prepared as you thought.
- Seek out discount codes before making any purchases to save on study materials and vouchers.
- Utilize resources such as the CompTIA website for practice questions and exam objectives to identify areas of weakness.
- Familiarize yourself with the exam format, particularly Performance-Based Questions (PBQs), through simulated exercises available online.
- Adopt a structured study plan and dedicate sufficient time to each topic, focusing on strengthening areas of weakness identified during practice sessions.
Overall, the Security+ certification helped me understand any gaps I had in my security knowledge. It is a well-recognized certification, and I would recommend it to anyone just starting out or wanting to get into cybersecurity. I hope this post can help.
